Direct access is a scheme which allows a person over the age of 21 to avoid the two year/25 kW restriction by taking a test on a machine of at least 35 kW (46.6 bhp). A pass allows you to ride any size of motorbike (i.e. 1000cc Honda).
Any instruction given on a machine that exceeds the normal learner motorcycle specification must be supervised at all times by a certified motorcycle instructor who should be in radio contact. You should also wear fluorescent or reflective clothing and follow all other provisional license restrictions.
Riders who reach the age of 21, while still within the two year period where they are restricted to a maximum 25 kW (33 bhp) machine, but who wish to ride larger bikes need to pass a further test on a motorcycle of at least 35 kW (46.6 bhp). They may practice on bikes over 25 kW (33 bhp) under the same practice conditions for direct access riders.
You will revert to learner status while practicing (on a motorcycle greater than 25 kW (33 bhp)) although test failure will not affect your existing license.
Day 1 - Introduction to the DAS, starts with confidence building, training may begin on a 125cc motorbike for an hour or so, then onto a 500cc+ motorbike. Depending on your previous riding experience we may begin straight on a 500cc+ motorbike, this will be determined on the day, when you feel ready, it’s radios on and out onto the road..
Day 2 – Training continues on the 500cc+ motorbikes, the training includes riding in the area of the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) Multipurpose Test Centre and an introduction to the DSA examiners on road test routes.
Day 3 - A proportion of the day will be spent at the DSA Multipurpose Test Centre, training and practicing the Module One Test on the MMA (Motorcycling Manoeuvring Area), you will be instructed by our trainer to practise all the elements of The Module One Test you will need to pass on your test day, then out of the MMA and back training on the road.
Day 4 – Today we will continue training while making our way to the DSA Multipurpose Test Centre, ready for your Module One Test, usually late morning, (depending on test time availability).
When you have successfully completed the Module One Test, we will take a break to have some lunch. After lunch we will go back onto the road to prepare you for the Module Two Test - usually early/mid afternoon. Your trainer will hand you over to the DSA examiner.
All the above (in the Direct Access 4 Day Course) applies, but we take things a little slower, and we have another days training as in Day 2.
4 & 5 day Direct Access Training Courses do NOT include your 125cc CBT Training. This will have to be completed BEFORE starting a Direct Access Training Course. You will also have to have passed the Theory Test.
